I’ve seen some great wardrobe inventions come from unlikely sources but I have to admit I was surprised to find a good idea gone bad featured in O’s (The Oprah Magazine) August issue. It’s called the Sole Mate and it essentially is a little plastic do-dad that you put on your heels to protect them from soft surfaces and cobblestone. Nice idea but you would not catch me dead wearing those stupid things on my nice heels!  It’s like training wheels for high heels.  And, can you imagine the conversations that you’ll end up having because of what you’re wearing on your heels? No thanks.

The best way to walk around in beautiful heels when you find yourself on a lawn or gravel is to tip-toe by placing all your weight on the balls of your feet. Even when I’m walking down a busy city sidewalk and I come across a grate, it��s tip-toe time.  Have I scuffed a few times? Yes, that’s what a cobbler’s for. I know some gals who carry flats with them for walking so they avoid ruining their heels altogether - great idea!

Disco ball

This year we herald the return of the dizzy days of disco dressing.

  • Predominantly silver
  • Flashy bright short dresses
  • In sequins, lamé, liquid silks, jet crystals, mirror fabrics and adorned with lacquered ornaments
  • Worn with black opaque tights or bare legs.


 

Anglaise[1]

Quiet understated elegance delivered by the palest of details, Anglaise is a trend of uncertain delicate patterns that manages to merge the wearer with the garment.

  • Barely-there effects; wisps of smoke, gentle ghostly lace, or ethereal embroidery.
  • Hammered silk blouses, images of uncertain shape and meaning, mineral structures and blurred effects that swoosh in silence.
  • Seen on every conceivable surface from boots to dresses.

 

 

 

Killer Shoulders

Cartoonish and obscenely exaggerated, we are in the grip of  ‘shoulder mania’.

  • Architectural sub-structures that create a pointed and polished silhouette
  • Formidable shape and razor sharp shoulder padding return
  • Fussy and overly embellished we hope they are distilled for the high street.

 

 

King Kong

Gorilla styling now has a totally new meaning.

  • Think Siberian chic: dresses with fur sleeves and monkeys as neck warmers.
  • Huge feasts of fluff and hair adorn short-cropped coats often made of brushed goat hair
  • In a multitude of vibrant colours
  • Gauntlet[2] bands of fur are also popular.

 

Pleats Please

Crumpled paper pleats that look effortlessly chic, but get the pleat wrong and you date your look.

  • Deep grooves that act as features, ornament and embellishment, not construction
  • This trend it about geometry meeting crumpled chaos
  • Look for envelope folds[3], furrowed pleats that look like poured concrete.

 

 

 

 

Peek-a-boo

Don’t be surprised by a little bit of high-contrast peeking out from beneath a subdued outer surface.

  • A two-tone effect offering a glimpse of excitement from an inner lining
  • A pop of colour and contrast gives fresh duality
  • Black with white, orange with cream, black with red.

 

 

Muted blue

Rich red, mouse, rust, ochre, putty, mustard, curry brown and black appear but the standout colour of the moment is Blueberry:

  • Pale petrol blue, teal and muted blue-greys
  • Deep and rich pigment both subtle and muted.

 

 

 

Applaud the collar

The Stand Up Collar a classic line is tricky to tailor and signifies a skill and involvement lacking in recent years.

  • Bright, colourful, exaggerated and embellished this is not the simple clean line of yesteryear.
  • Large, proud and upright collars
  • Some in fur for warmth and others demure versions in a sombre palette.

 

 

 

Walking boots

  • Crotch-high leather boots
  • Overt sexiness and Pretty Woman-esqe styling
  • Leather buttock skimmers
  • Choose kinky leather garters worn over naked thighs or suede versions that incorporated themselves into garments.

 

 

 

 

KEY Details

  • Jewellery of the moment: Huge chain-link necklaces
  • Clothing detail: Stand up collar, high contrast combinations, pleats and folds
  • Embellishment: Bows are big: think Alice magnified 100 times
  • Clothing line: Shoulder padding or leg-of-mutton sleeves
  • Makeup: Pale skin and rouged lips
  • footwear: Lather waders
  • Accessory: Gloves, gauntlets and fur wristbands.

Unless the invitation specifically states black-tie or cocktail, it's perfectly fine to play fashion renegade every now and then.  There's nothing more modern than a nice pear of well-cut jeans worn with sexy tops and statement heels.  The key is to pick a style that fits well, flatters your figure and accentuates your assets.  Darkwashed, black and grey denim are all the rage.  There's no doubt jeans have a casual, dressed-down feel about them, but they complement glitzy tops very well.  Sexy shoes, too, look fabulous with designer jeans.  One of my favourite looks right now is black jeans paired with a men's tuxedo jacket and superfeminine skyscraper heels.  I call this "androgynous chic"!
